At home my husband wanted to know all about my lunch and if anything had happened as I was gone 4 hours. I told him it was just lunch, we were just friends, I enjoyed his company and he bought me a dress and shoes. I paraded about with them. They were much more upscale than anything in my wardrobe. He was uneasy about the dress and shoes. He asked if I was going to see him again. I told him I did not know. By this time he was overtly encouraging me to, in effect, have an affair to justify swinging. He inferred I owed my date something for the things he bought.

I let the doctor call a few more times before accepting another date. Each time we talked we revealed more of ourselves. I worried I was telling him too much. He asked me to go for a ride in his Porsche. I played coy and suggested dinner and a movie. I was still afraid to be alone in his car with him. We made a date for Friday night. I asked my husband if it was alright for me to have a dinner and movie date. He was adamant it was fine and told me I needed to “socialize” more.

I wore the slinky mini skirt dress, high heels and earrings. When he saw me enter the restaurant and stroll toward him wearing them he knew I was his for the night. I knew it in my heart too but my mind still said no. We dined with wine and strolled to a nearby theater. While watching the movie I let him put his arm around me. I put my hand on his knee. Neither of us was watching the movie. We were waiting for, “The End”. At the last scene we got up and he held my hand out to the lobby. There he turned me toward him and asked if I would stop by for a glass of wine so he could show me his place. We both knew the implications.

I told him I had to make a phone call. I went to the phone booth and called my husband and explained my date wanted to take me to his apartment for a glass of wine. I asked if it was okay. He at first hesitated but then affirmed it was okay. I persisted and asked if something happened would he be jealous. I told him, if I went I might actually “do it”. Instead of resisting he encouraged me. Back at the lobby I told the doctor I had, “Checked In”. I was ready for wine. He walked me to my car and I followed his Porsche to his apartment complex. He parked on the street so he could accompany me to the apartment. I was awkward getting out of my car and stumbled a bit walking next to him due to nervousness. His apartment was in a large upscale two story building complex. We strolled past a pool and club house. There were a few swimmers. I could hear their splashing about and smell the chlorine. It was a warm California evening with a full moon. Once past the pool the smell of hibiscus mingled with eucalyptus trees. I clutched my purse and held my elbows as if shivering despite the warm evening as we approached his front door. I told myself I was coming only for a glass of wine. My heart was pounding.

He unlocked the door and swung it open for my entry. I hesitated, then crossed the threshold. My cheeks were afire. I was faint with uncertainty. I stared downward and then raised my view to shyly scan the room. I was relieved to see no sign of another tenant. There was a large fish tank. I went to it and stared at it. I pretended to admire the fish while my mind raced. I held my elbows with arms crossed, purse dangling. He opened a bottle of red wine while I remained absorbed with the fish. He poured two glasses and handed me one. I released the grip of one elbow to receive it, partially disarming myself but still clutched my purse. I took a long sip. He smiled and asked which fish I liked. I told him the little blue and red one fluttering its tail. He told me it was a male guppy and it used its tail to attract females. He showed me a little frog hiding in one corner on a lily pad. More relaxed with wine, he showed me the apartment. The kitchen and living room floated briefly before my gaze. The only registered intakes were everything was clean and orderly except for medical texts on a table and it appeared there was no other tenant.

We knew the last room was the bedroom. When entering it he gently held my wrist of the hand clutching my purse and led, as if to protect me. There was a large water bed, a dresser, night stands and more medical textbooks on a book case wall. The bedroom also had its own bathroom. I stared at the water bed. I had never been on one. He dimmed the light halfway, turned to me, took my purse, my last protective shield, and set it on the night stand. I stood defenseless holding the wine glass. He guided the rim to my lips. I took a sip while he tilted the glass back and held the sweaty palm of my other hand.
