Why can't I choose an avatar for my profile?

You can.
In your user profile, Select 'Edit Avatar' and then Choose 'Use Custom Avatar'. Next step is to simply upload your own pic or avatar. Or link it from a URL.

Just remember, the maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB.

I don't have a choice to select custom avatar.

Maybe 'Show Avatars' in un-checked in your options.

Nope. I have it checked to show avatars.

Then that function may be disabled for users.

Aw, that's not fair to the members.

Avatars slow down the board and can do so a tremendous amount if they are linked and not hosted... so you wouldn't like them anyway
