Telcos limit bandwidth usage even to paying customers. They don't want competition from non-corporate non-profit entities. i.e. free municipal networks and the like. hotspots are tolerated because bandwidth and range are limited. Smut in all it's beautiful variations is largely hijacked as a money-making opportunity. In the land of the 'free' you are free to choose which websites to pay for content. We all play the same monopoly game in the USA and no one bothers to question the rules Wall St. fatcats impose on us. From an economist's point of view, it is indecent [not to] charge for any content regardless of type.
The sites you mentioned probably had big bandwidth expenses and were ****** to charge. There's the rub. Even groups wanting to provide free video are stymied this way. It's like when I need to put air in my car tires. I refuse to pay a quarter to one of those machines that will do two tires max if you are lucky and fast and prepared before dropping the quarter. Maybe not a good analogy but you get my point. Sweating it out with the bike pump may look stupid. But byGod I can air up all four tires for free. Remembering the good old days, I miss the cuckold forum (a site similar to this but much larger). I miss when dark cavern use to be free (yes the premium members area was free for a bout a year I believe). I miss Karen Kay when her stories use to be free (now site sucks).
